Basler neighbourhoods - Part 2: Vorstädte and Am Ring

In this second chapter of the Basler neighbourhoods, we will stay on the Grossbasler side, working our way slowly out of the center with Vorstädte and Am Ring. Both neighbourhoods are still very close to the city center.

Vorstädte is a neighbourhood that encircles the Altstadt of Grossbasel with the Rhine as a border to the north and south. A lively and bustling neighborhood located next to the city center of Basel. The University, the botanical garden as well as the theatre and the well-known Kunstmuseum are all situated in this neighbourhood. It is known for its historic buildings, vibrant shopping streets, and diverse culinary scene. Vorstädte is a popular area for both locals and tourists, with a mix of trendy boutiques, traditional Swiss shops, and international eateries.

The Steinenvorstadt attracts especially in the evening and at night a quiet young audience with its bars and restaurants lined up on both sights of the street.

This hip and trendy neighbourhood is surely known for a divers and bursting night life, but less for its pleasant and calm living conditions. So maybe in the neighbourhood choose a restaurant to dine but not a home to life in.

AmRing is situated around the Steinenringstrasse as an additional outer layor west to the Vorstädte and the Grossbasler Altstadt. This neighborhood is a bit less central as Vorstädte but a lot more quiet. It’s known for its elegant residential buildings and upscale amenities. Although this neighbourhood itself doesn’t provide any bigger parks, there are several parks adjoining it, such as the Schützenmattpark, the smaller De Wette Park just in front of the train station SBB or the Zoo and the footpath along the Birsig. This more tranquil and high standard living environment very near to the city center is quiet popular among affluent residents, which makes it also difficult to find available housing offers within.
