Last week I gave you a brief introduction about Basel with the promise to present in the following weeks each neighbourhood a bit closer to you. So let’s start with the citycenter. The center of Basel is called the Altstadt (Old Town). Whereby there are two neighbourhoods assigned to it: One is the Grossbasler Alstadt and the other is the Kleinbasler Altstadt, simply divided by the Rhine River connected by the oldest bridge in Basel, the MittlereBrücke (Middle Bridge) first build in 1225.Alternatively to the bridge you can take the stairs behind the Munster down to the Rhine and take the ferry “Leu” to the Kleinbasler side and take a stroll on the riverside.
The Altstadt (Oldtown) of Grossbasel is characterized by its historical significance and boasts of well-preserved medieval buildings, including the Basler Münster and the Rathaus, reflecting the city's rich cultural heritage. The Münsterplatz is host to the yearly OpenAirCinema which always starts in August.
The Grossbasler Altstadt is home to many classical cultural attractions such as museums, art galleries, and theaters. The area is known for its high-end shopping (upper Freie Strasse) and dining options. The architecture and layout of Grossbasels Altstadt broadcast a traditional charm, with cobblestone streets, charming squares, and historic fountains. Creating a picturesque setting, which appeals to those who appreciate old-world elegance. For a nice stroll go up Leonhardsberg pass by Heuberg to Spalenberg and discover the little streets inbetween.
The Oldtown (Altstadt) of Kleinbasel therefore has more of a contemporary vibe. It offers a more dynamic atmosphere compared to Grossbasel. The neighborhood is characterized by a vibrant street scene, reflecting a younger and more diverse community with hip cafes, trendy bars, and music venues attracting a younger and more alternative crowd. The Kleinbasler Altstadt is also known for its legal prostitution and adult entertainment venues around Webergasse. Prostitution is regulated and legal in Switzerland, including in Basel, where sex workers are required to have valid permits and work in licensed brothels.
Additionally, the Altstadt (Oldtown) of Kleinbasel hosts several cultural events and festivals such as the upcoming Floss (https://floss.ch) or the BaselTattoo (https://www.baseltattoo.ch), further highlighting its dynamic and vibrant spirit. The neighbourhood's location along the Rhine River provides scenic views with nice bars and restaurants as well as opportunities for leisurely strolls, or picnics by the water.
Both neighbourhoods are relatively expensive to live in due to high demand and attractive location, but certainly reflect the typical Basel atmosphere on the Rhine.
