Moving to Switzerland

For sure Switzerland is one of the most attractive countries to live in. When I talk to my relocation clients they often say, living in Switzerland was a dream come true: Its landscapes with the green hills to the mountains covered with the snow like a dip of sugar and the blue lakes in between, glittering in the sunshine. Everything clean and safe.

Therefore, more and more people wish to work and life in Switzerland.

But even if the country is maybe your dream destination. Moving here still comes with a lot of changes and many uncertainties.

In the following there are some basic facts and details on Switzerland and

the Swiss that should be known before coming to Switzerland.

Housing Hunt

Start your housing search early as Basel's rental market can be competitive.

Consider factors like proximity to public transportation, amenities, and your workplace while choosing a neighborhood.

I will get into more details about Basel’s neighborhoods in one of my following posts.

Healthcare System

Switzerland boasts one of the best healthcare systems globally.

Ensure you're familiar with how it works and consider getting health insurance as it's mandatory for all residents.

There are many options to choose of, so its highly recommended to get independent advice before choosing.

Schools

Switzerland's education system is decentralized, with each of the country's 26 cantons responsible for education within its territory.

Therefore, every time you change the canton the system may change also. So, choose wisely before moving with kids.

As an alternative Switzerland has quite a large number of private schools you can choose of.

Daycare

Switzerland offers a range of daycare options to accommodate families' diverse needs and preferences.

Allowing parents to balance work and childcare responsibilities while ensuring their children receive quality care and early education.

Network Building

Join expat groups, professional associations, and social clubs to expand your social and professional network. Networking can open up opportunities and make your transition smoother.

To join expat groups on social media before arriving in Switzerland can help you to get some insights and information in advance.

Cleanliness and Orderliness

Switzerland is known for its clean streets, well-maintained public spaces, and efficient public services.

Swiss people take pride in their environment and take good care of their country and adhere to strict standards of cleanliness and orderliness.

Community Spirit

While Swiss society can sometimes be perceived as reserved, there's a strong sense of community and social cohesion.

There is a big identification with their hometown and neighborhood which often creates close-knit communities where people look out for one another.

Local festivals and events provide opportunities for socializing and bonding.

Cultural Diversity

Switzerland is a melting pot of cultures and languages. With four official languages (German, French, Italian, and Romansh), each region of Switzerland has its own distinct culture and traditions.

This swiss diversity makes it sometimes difficult to integrate, but at the same time offers a broad range of features in a small area.

Moving to Switzerland can be an exciting experience for you and your family, but careful planning and preparation are crucial to ensuring a smooth transition.
